WASHINGTON, D.C., March 9, 2018 – TRACE International, the world’s leading anti-bribery standard setting organization, has named GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) the 2018 winner of the TRACE Innovation in Anti-Bribery Compliance Award (IACA) for their initiative to incorporate e-government directly into GSK’s Anti-Bribery Anti-Corruption Compliance Standard.

GSK, which interacts with government officials on a daily basis as part of their business operations, launched an innovative anti-corruption compliance initiative requiring business managers to use all available e-government tools and platforms – e-procurement, e-customs, e-licensing, e-taxes, etc. These controls reduce the risk of bribe solicitation by reducing face-to-face contact with government officials.

GSK is also committed to engaging in the public policy debate around the role of e-government as an anti-corruption tool.   Of note, it recently supported a report from the Basel Institute of Governance, which explores the potential for e-government to reduce corruption, and provides insights, guidance and recommendations that help governments and businesses.

“GSK’s initiative to incorporate e-government directly into their ABAC Standard and to reduce the risk of bribe demands is unique in its approach and creates an opportunity to broaden the impact of compliance across the organization,” said TRACE President Alexandra Wrage. “This innovative approach alongside GSK’s commitment to support public debate has the potential to drive positive change in governments and other companies around the globe.”

Nick Hirons, Senior Vice President, Global Ethics and Compliance, GSK said, “I'm pleased that more Government services are being made available online. GSK’s experiences indicate it can reduce exposure to risk, while at the same time making it easier and more straightforward for businesses to operate.”

GSK was honored as this year’s IACA recipient at the 14th Annual TRACE Forum in Washington, D.C. The IACA highlights the growing sophistication and innovation of compliance programs worldwide. Past winners have included Intel Corporation, Cambridge University Press and Dell Inc.
