Join the Vancouver Anti-Corruption Institute and TRACE for an interactive session, designed for journalists, on anti-corruption in the UK. Topics will include:

  • The SFO’s approach to deferred prosecution agreements
  • Tools, resources and efforts used to counter corruption and related financial crime

Presented by the Vancouver Anti-Corruption Institute and TRACE, this series brings together current and former government officials from several countries, international development bank personnel and private sector lawyers to provide an overview of anti-corruption investigations and enforcement for journalists. The series will remain publicly available following the scheduled sessions.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY

Matthew Wagstaff

Head of Fraud, Bribery & Corruption
UK Serious Fraud Office

Matthew has over twenty five years’ worth of experience prosecuting serious and complex fraud. From 1994 through to 2003 he worked at the Solicitor’s Office of HM Customs and Excise where he was principally responsible for prosecuting a range of offences including drug smuggling, missing trader fraud, alcohol diversion fraud and money laundering.

 

In 2001 Matthew was appointed as the SCS Head of Special Casework Division (Commercial) in the Solicitor’s Office where he led a team of prosecutors responsible for prosecuting the office’s most complex tax fraud cases. He continued in that post when the Revenue and Customs Prosecutions Office was established in 2005 right through to RCPO’s merger with the CPS in 2010. In 2009, he was additionally appointed as Head of RCPO’s International, Policy and Advisory Division and led a number of workstreams that supported the merger with the CPS.

 

In 2010 Matthew was appointed Deputy Head of Fraud in the CPS where he had strategic responsibility for stakeholder relations with HMRC; management responsibility for a number of operational units dealing with the full range of fraud casework and responsibility for the Central Fraud Group’s international casework.

 

Matthew joined the SFO in the summer of 2012 and is currently Head of Fraud, Bribery & Corruption Division A which deals with investigations and prosecutions relating to the full range of SFO offences.

 

Neeta Chityal

Legal Director

Neeta Chityal is a Legal Director in the Global Investigations team based in London. She has significant experience in advising financial institutions, corporates and individuals.  Neeta is experienced in acting for and leading teams on large-scale, complex and multi-jurisdictional corporate crime and regulatory investigations for a range of corporate clients and individuals.  She also uses her experience in both finance litigation and contentious regulatory matters to advise institutional clients on challenging and complex regulatory related civil claims.  Her experience means that she is well equipped to advise clients on civil and criminal actions related to corporate misconduct.
